Sustainability
At H&F Giving we have cut waste by going paperless where possible and making recycling part of standard operations. Last year, we also implemented our first environmental sustainability practice with ‘Tech4Kids’ which asked people for devices that were destined for e-waste, to instead donate them to those without any in their homes. So far we have saved 237 devices from waste through Council outreach to businesses and a local tech social enterprise who check and refurbish them for future use. We have also helped redirect furniture and food destined for waste by collaborating with our local BID group, and hope to expand this sharing approach as the team grows.
Rapid response
In Spring 2020 we launched the first live covid response appeal in London, and possibly the UK. With this, our local community was able to respond with compassion and generosity to support local organisations working to keep everyone safe, fed and well. We supported more than 140 activities which received a portion of £132,000 in rapid response grants.
Connections
Our base of donors, grantees and partnerships continues to grow, helping us become a go-to for local people to assist their neighbours. The Big H&F Christmas Lunch (moving an annual event at an indoor venue to a doorstep delivery of a festive meal in partnership with the council and local social food enterprise) and Tech4Kids (ensuring that 1,500 local pupils in urgent need of computers or internet connectivity at home can get the tech they deserve) are just two examples of this. We have also supported numerous other projects in the borough including facilitating local corporates and staff with volunteer matches, and resource giving to non-profit groups.
Grant giving
We have also distributed more than £450,000 of Council grants in support for heating, food and bills, other assistance, which has reached approximately 4,000 people in need. This relationship has gone from strength to strength, allowing us to develop our systems and receive further requests to support grant giving initiatives. It has also enabled us to establish ourselves as a bigger grant giver in the borough, with more and more local groups looking to us for vital programme support.
We shifted to a system that allowed local people to have a say in where this money goes. This led to our first ever Community Grants Panel to be created and fully trained in 2021, consisting of six residents from borough who supported in distributing funding for Covid responses as well as period poverty. The benefits of community involvement are clear to see and as a result is an area we are looking to grow.
